The Expanded Kitchen
This kitchen, although not tiny, was short on usable space and felt cut off from the rest of the house. There were too many doorways, and the Den felt like wasted space that didn’t get used. The answer? Knock down a wall and incorporated the Den into a new larger kitchen. The problem? This wall was structural. So Chris Gage found a way to hide a couple of beams I the ceiling and really open things up. Also, Chris took 2 windows from the Living Room that matched the existing windows on the rear wall and made a wall of light across the back, replacing the 2 Living Room windows with new ones that matched the style of the 75 year old house. The existing Den and adjoining rooms had beautiful hardwood floors; Chris used the same wood in the original Kitchen area, blending the finish so that the new flooring was an exact match to the old hardwood. Notice the use of wood on the counter tops as well. The island top is of soapstone. The creamy white of the cabinets is a Benjamin Moore paint color that matched for the cabinet finish.
